Soccer’s Popularity

angelsfancrc:

Did anybody who is not a soccer junkie actually know that the Los Angeles Galaxy were in the MLS cup final? I think the answer would be a resounding no. I think that this proves how minimal the impact of David Beckham on the consciousness of America is.

Honestly, soccer should be among the most popular games in America despite its lack of history here. From, what I have seen, soccer actually is a more aggressive sport than even football, where contact is limited by the rules. I will remain adamant that one rule that I honestly believe will help gain casual fans of soccer in America is that the clock counts down and not up. All of our other sports count down, so I honestly believe it confuses Americans who do not want to constantly be calculating how much time is left in the game or until halftime. Americans are used to countdown clocks. I know it wouldn’t fly in international competition, but for the struggling MLS, it might work.

First off I dont think the MLS is struggling. The league it self is still really young at only 14 years old. It continues to expand each year and more European players are coming. To Be honest Soccer is really popular in America it just doesn’t get the face time the other sports have. But now they are showing EPL games on ESPN and USA soccer players are starting to play more in Europe…Soccer in America only has one way to go and thats up.
